CHRIS STAIN & ARMSROCK (BROOKLYN)

In preparation for their collaboration at Ad Hoc Gallery in Bushwick, Armsrock and Chris Stain sailed deep into the Brooklyn night not far from the huge Brooklyn Navy Yard, hoisting up ladders to put up a large mural stirring the contemplative inner currents of child's play entitled "I Know There Is Love", inspired by a Crass song of the same name. Using projections of their original work as well as improvised chalk drawings, the storytelling includes two tadpole-aged lads and a small harbor of imaginary vessels. In it one instantly escapes to a freer time of discovery when multiple dreams were easily set afloat. As if a reaction to the rough and salty seas of daily life in New York for many, the street artist co-captains hang a huge banner across the mast of this ship to announce that it is possible to right the bow and head toward hope. Graffiti-ing for Change
The barrier that separates Israel and the West Bank has become a controversial symbol of the centuries-old rift between the region's Jewish and Arab communities, but thanks to a trio of Dutch and Palestinian activists, it has become a canvas as well. In 2007, Faris Arouri, Yousef Nijim and Raji Najam launched SendAMessage.nl, a website that allows visitors to submit messages that the group will spray-paint on the wall for $40 a pop. (Words of hate or anti-Semitism are not allowed). So far, some 900 tidings have been added, including a 1.6-mile-long message by a South African anti-Apartheid activist and a falafel recipe.

NUART 09 : CALL FOR WALLS !

Ok, It's that time of year again. Nuart's 5th "Call for Walls". Although the city and the media's focus is generally on the static Nuart Exhibition, our main goal and focus has always been to get work on the streets. The exhibition basically working as a cultural alibi for us to hit up the city.
The annual "call for walls" has in the past given us some amazing legal spots where visiting artists have been able to take their time to produce some stunning pieces. Boats, Cars, Vans, Walls, Houses.. whatever, if you have a spot, we'd like to see and consider it.

Here's how it works. Take a photo of the spot/object along with the dimensions and location address and mail it to us here at Nuart. We'll compile a folder with all the details and send it out to visiting artists before they arrive. We can't guarantee that we'll use the space, this is up to the artists and depends on time, but as you can see from the images above, there's been some terrific work produced.

SKEWVILLE, LOGAN HICK, CHRIS STAIN

Three of this years Nuart crew collaborate on a single piece. It's this collaborative spirit that we love so much about the Brooklyn Street Art scene, something we hope to invoke for this years Nuart.

SPOTLIGHT ON : ELLIS GALLAGHER (BROOKLYN)

Thought we'd start a little series that focusses on a few of our favourite artists. First out in our new "Spotlight Series" is Brooklynite Ellis Gallagher.

ELLIS GALLAGHER

is a native New Yorker who creates chalk etchings of shadows of everyday, urban street objects. As a former graffiti writer, his work can be found in New York City and beyond, in Autograf: New York City’s Graffiti Writers by Peter Sutherland (Powerhouse Books 2004), as well as in numerous newspapers, magazines, on television and in films. Currently a Contemporary/Street Artist known as (C)ELLIS G., Gallagher’s work has appeared on the cover of Time Out New York, in the New York Daily News, The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Village Voice, The Brooklyn Paper, Mass Appeal Magazine, Artnet Magazine and many more.

NUART09 EXHIBITION SPACE

Very happy to announce that we've secured a great space for this years static show on the city harbor front. Skur 2 is a renovated dockside warehouse that was, until recently, home to the Transit Art Gallery. The external walls have been hit up numerous times by the Nuart crew, this year we move inside. We think this is as close as we can get to the actual spot that the ship "Restauration" left the dockside with the first Norwegian to New York settlers back in 1825. We thought it fitting that this years Brooklynite's arrived and worked at the same spot !
