LEON REID IV : ON GRAFFITI PT 1

Part one of Leon Reid's recent talk for Nuart 09 at Rogaland Kunstskolen, check back soon for parts 2-5.

Wednesday, 26 August 2009

The art market crash kicks in to the Street Art community. But seriously, does he not realise how much hash costs in Norway !!!

GREEN GRAFFITI

Guerrilla gardening and street art come together in this recipe for green mayhem. Get out there and spread some spores!

Ingredients:
-1 can of beer (or 12 oz yoghurt)
-1/2 tsp sugar
-Several clumps of garden moss (found in damp, shady places)

1. Rip the moss into small chunks, blend with sugar and beer (or yoghurt) until smooth and creamy.

2. Find an appropriate location (fairly moist without too much sun).

3. Using a stencil or freehand, paint your design.

4. Over the next 2–3 weeks revisit the spot and spray-mist your design with water.

5. Watch your green design grow!

GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB & PARTNERS : EYEWRITER

tempt writes tempt from thesystemis on Vimeo.

Behold the latest ocular assault weapon from the Graffiti Research Lab, openFrameworks and The Ebeling Group: The EyeWriter. It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus + custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes.

The EyeWriter project is on ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people, who are suffering from ALS, with creative technologies. The project began in Los Angeles, Caifornia in 2009, when members of the GRL, FAT, OF and TEG communities teamed-up with a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist, named Tony Quan, aka TEMPTONE. Tony was diagnosed with ALS in 2003. The disease has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes. But, the ALS hasn’t touched Tony’s sharp mind, creative energy or his desire to write graffiti. In August of 2009, artist from around the world: London, Hong Kong, Madrid, Amsterdam and New York City, converged for 10 days in southern California, converted Mick and Caskey Ebeling’s Venice Beach house into a laboratory and began to work with Tony on a low-cost, open source eye-tracking system that would allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes.

BRAD DOWNEY "Making Illegal permanent" Sweden

One of the finest pieces of public art we've seen in a long time. Though born in beleaguered communities like the Bronx, the tag and it's near descendant the "throw up", have become as intrinsic to the urban landscape as the ever present billboard. The attitude towards graffiti seems to be making a shift in a more positive direction and it's works like this that are leading the charge. Slowly it's been recognised that there are practitioners of street art and graffiti out there who are far from being just vandals, and it's this type of work that will hopefully lead people to "look" at graffiti in a new way. Once people start "looking", maybe they'll start learning and recognise that the streetart and graffiti communities have as much to offer as your state funded art institutions.

DAVID CHOE : DIRTYHANDS

If the film's half as good as the trailer, it's gonna be one of the best graf/outsider/artist movies ever made. No release date scheduled just yet, but should be "coming soon". Check out the dirtyhands site here. And if you fancy grabbing some promo bits and pieces, go here

If we get our act together, then hopefully we'll be sorting a screening during Nuart.

“Billions of years ago there was nothing then a big explosion happened and now you’re beating off to the internet, eating junk, playing video games, buying dandruff shampoo, teeth whitening toothpaste and doing sit ups on a weird rubber thing you bought from an infomercial for $49.99… Who planned this?

NUART 09 & SF KINO present

We've secured two of the most exciting films on the block for this years Nuart film screenings, a premiere of the excellent New Brow and the classic Beautiful Losers. Films will be screened at the cities main cinema SF-Kino on Friday 11 and Sat 12 Sept. Tickets available soon.

New Brow
First hand accounts from the artists, galleries and collectors who started and continue the new american art movement. Pop Surrealism and Low Brow is a wide spread populist art movement with origins in Low Brow art, underground comix, punk music, hotrod street culture, Kustum culture, Street Art, Graffiti, Graphic Design, Tattoo, Surf Culture, Tiki Culture and other California sub-cultures. Watch as this new movement rises from the streets and into the galleries.
celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Loving this street installation from Dublin's Kings of Concrete in association with Dublin city council to promote their skate festival. A great idea that should be repeated around the globe.
