STREET ART NEW YORK

Nuart friends and partners in last years Brooklyn crime Jaime and Steven, have produced what looks like a fabulous book on their cities glorious street art.

About the Book

Street Art New York, by Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo, with a foreword by Carolina A. Miranda, published in April 2010 by Prestel Publishing (Random House).

The authors of the successful Brooklyn Street Art book (and founders of BrooklynStreetArt.com) expand their scope and take readers on a fast-paced run through the streets of New York, along the waterways, on the rooftops, and up the walls of today's ever-morphing vibrant Street Art scene as only NYC can tell it.

With an introduction by noted cultural journalist Carolina A. Miranda (C-Monster.net) putting Street Art in the context of the personal experience of a New Yorker, readers will be taken aback by this compelling portrait of the state of urban art featuring work on the streets of New York from 102 artists from around the world. With a collection of aproximately 200 images by exciting new comers as well as beloved "old masters" such as New Yorkers Swoon, Judith Supine, Dan Witz, Faile, Skewville, WK Interact, LA's Shepard Fairey, Brazil's Os Gemeos, Ethos, Denmark's Armsrock, France's Space Invader, C215, Mr. Brainwash, Germany's Herakut, Belgium's ROA, London's Nick Walker, Connor Harrington, and the infamous Banksy.

THE LOCKSLEY SHEA COLLECTION

"With you I want to live"

Haven't heard mention of this show, looks like a very interesting collection. Includes pieces by Nick Walker, Banksy, Swoon and Blek Le Rat.

"The visionary collection of Gordon Locksley and George T Shea, on exhibit at the Museum of Art in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, is presented in this review. This daring collection features fifty years of cutting edge art; from early Pop Artists and Minimalists like Andy Warhol and Donald Judd, to contemporary Street Artists like Blek le Rat, Nick Walker, Swoon, and Banksy. By juxtaposing the extremes of style and content, the exhibition creates unique visual harmonies that enhance the work and highlight the value of visual art"

STEN & LEX's POSTER STENCIL'S

STEN LEX stencil poster from STEN on Vimeo.

Love this description from Sten & Lex, I added the last sentence through artistic license so maybe the quote marks shouldn't there..but feeling quite poetic this morning.

"We call this technique "Poster Stencil" because the work is both a stencil and poster at the same time. As you can see in the video, we pasted up the matrix of the stencil (cut on paper) on a panel of wood as a poster, we then painted on the matrix in black, when all is dry we destroy the matrix leaving some parts still pasted to the wood. In this way the stencil cannot ever be reproduced and the matrix dies when the work is born, each piece, like a person, becomes unique"

VANDALISED CHOE

Vandalism, originally uploaded by kalevkevad.

Apparently the shopping centre that owned the wall that this Choe sat on asked a company to remove the tag that had appeared on it over night.
Having failed miserably to remove the tag, the guy went on to blast everything, after 2 days of water jetting the wall, they destroyed the Choe and left the tag.. idiotic. Almost as idiotic as having Choe's tag painted over the day after the piece was finished.. errm, excuse me.. that's the artists signature !

NICK WALKER IN PARIS

Nuart cohort Nick Walker just put this great new piece up in Paris. Great to see he finally found a decent spot for it. Titled "Le Corancan" the work is an obvious commentary on the banning of the muslim Hijab whist at the same time promoting...oh well.. you know what we mean..

NUART'S "ELOQUENT VANDALS" OPENS EURODOC

Here at Nuart we're renowned for being last with the news, particularly when it's about our own stuff. Yesterday Nuart's documentary "Eloquent Vandals" opened Oslo's annual European Documentary Festival, Eurodoc 2010. If you wanted to see it, it's too late, sorry, our PR department should be fired, or at least get up a bit earlier in the morning and check their mails.

The good news is, the film will be available shortly on DVD, but I guess you've heard that one before right ?

LOWLIFE OPENING NIGHT

THE ROSEMALE RIOTS

So, we had this crazy opening night on Friday for the "Lowlife" show at Stavanger Kunstforening, over 500 people crammed into the house over three hours and experienced one of Norway's first shows dedicated to outsider, street and lowbrow art. What a night, everyone from kids to skate punks to millionaire collectors and a rag tag bunch of lowlife artists.
We had a great night, a riot of a time.

Big Thanks to everyone who made it out. The show is up until April 11 so do go check it out.

More images on my flickr, I'll post more here as and when I get the chance.

"The Creative lives is a website dedicated to bringing you inside the lives of today’s contemporary artists. Starting in March 2010 we will be launching new documentaries every Monday on the lives of Kelsey Brookes, Mark Dean Veca, Megan Whitmarsh, Porous Walker, Barry McGee, and more. We will also be releasing outtakes and some of the super8 film shot on location."

EYEWRITER

Great to see two of Nu's friends and colleagues getting together for a project, seems that GRL and Co's "Eyewriter" project, which debuted at last years Nuart, is set to win the inaugural Futureeverything Award. Voting finished late last night and the screen shot shows the Eyewriter project ahead by 1%.

Some of you may know Futureeverything through our Numusic projects with E.C.A.S/I.C.A.S, terrific festival based in Manchester formerly know as Futuresonic. If only our own local politicians could muster a little of the same visionary approach to festival strategies hey..but that's another story.

The EyeWriter project is an ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people who are suffering from ALS with creative technologies. It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes.

Beyond the Street is comprised of interviews with 100 key players in street and urban art from around the world, each of which is richly illustrated with inspiring images. Its impressive list of participants, as well as the unique diversity of their perspectives, makes the book an authoritative manual on these genres. For the first time, this 400-page tome brings together the direct points of view of leading artists and the most important sales outlets for street art as well as key commentators, collectors, and enthusiasts. Combined, these separate and distinct outlooks create a uniquely authentic collective portrait of street and urban art that is captivating, informative, and entertaining.

More Info

Street art has established itself as an integral part of the art world in the last few years. The crossover from subculture to high culture is illustrated by the recent attention that this work has been given by renowned institutions such as the Tate Modern and Fondation Cartier as well as by auction houses like Sotheby’s. The topic is discussed in art magazines and the cultural pages of leading newspapers and is featured in the syllabuses of art and design schools. As interest soared, the need for information about street art grew. But, until now, there was no insightful view into the thought and work processes of a reticent, heterogeneous scene whose would-be members often don’t even identify with the label.

Comprised of interviews with 100 key players from around the world, Beyond the Street offers a comprehensive examination of street and urban art. Insiders Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie question each of their subjects on every conceivable aspect of the genre – from the past to the future, from the artists’ ideals to their daily lives, from working in complete freedom to working in the art and commercial worlds. The thought-provoking range of answers make the 400-page book an incomparably extensive source of direct, unfiltered information.

Beyond the Street features interviews with leading artists such as Shepard Fairey, Swoon, and Os Gemeos. The book also offers the views of representatives of the most important sales outlets for street art including Jeffrey Deitch and Jonathan LeVine Gallery. In addition, curators from auction houses such as Christie’s and Phillips de Pury comment on the development of street art in a classical art context. Interviews with key commentators, collectors, and enthusiasts such as Martha Cooper, Wooster Collective, and Agnes B. provide further insight. Brought together, these separate and distinct perspectives create a uniquely authentic collective portrait of street and urban art that is captivating, informative, and entertaining.

Each interview in Beyond the Street is richly illustrated with photographs of an inspiring collection of work. In addition to presenting outdoor work, the book also features the pieces that the artists have created for exhibitions and other indoor spaces. The commercial aspect of the street art movement is rigorously documented for the first time. Among the photographs featured are a number of images of the artists’ studios or the artists themselves at work, providing a rare glimpse into their methods and environments.

LOWLIFE SHOW !

So we decided to have a little show this month. Having been invited by Stavanger Art Society to come up with an exhibition for them, I thought what better than to bring a bunch of low brow lowlifes into this august institution.

The show opens on March 12 at kl1900 and features new work and installations from Dolk, Pøbel, Atle Østrem, Line Osmundsen, Muskelpust, Richard Bentley and yours truly, Martyn Reed. Yes, that's right folks, I'll also be joining the fun with a few canvasses.

We've only had around 8 weeks in between working on other more important stuff to get this together. I say this only so you don't get your expectations up. In saying that, I think we'll manage to put on a fun and respectable show. To entertain you, we'll be bringing in live music, dj's and go go dancers. Basically anything to detract you from looking too closely at the art.

If like us, you think the local art scene could do with a shot of adrenalin, then do try and make it to the opening night. Below is a silly little press release. Feel free to copy and pass it on to anyone who doesn't usually go to exhibitions or have any interest in the finer arts. We think they'll like it.

Preview : March 12 kl1900 til late
March 14-April 11
Stavanger Kunstforening

Organised by Richard Bentley and Martyn Reed

“Lowlife “ opens on Friday March 12th with a bang.. and closes April 11th with a whimper. The show will feature a vast array of traditional works on canvas as well as various objects including doors, kiddy cars, riot shields, children’s toys, skatedecks, surfboards and maybe even the human body..

*The opening night will feature various events including dj’s, film screenings, live music, fun fair rides, burlesque dancers, a tattooed and bearded lady, live body painting, an introductory speech and live duet by Mick Jagger and Bjørk plus various other subversive “happenings”. More importantly, there’ll also be a bar where you can purchase alcoholic drinks.

Martyn Reed, curator says:

"On March 12th, we’ll be curating Stavanger's first show of, dare we say, Outsider Art..Yes we dare. Well, actually, it’s not strictly Outsider Art in the truest sense, just artists who prefer to work outside the archaic visual arts “points system”, what is that about ?

This dynamic group show featuring the likes of Dolk, Pøbel, Richard Bentley, Paul Ariel Hoffstad, Atle Østrem , Muskelpust, Line Osmundsen and yours truly, amongst others.. Will take place at the renowned premises of Stavanger Kunstforening. One of the oldest art societies in Norway. We'll be breathing a little life into the usually more conservative place. Think CSI finding the corpse of Mickey Mouse in a Tattoo parlour meets a run down themepark in fancy dress with waitresses serving Molotov cocktails. .only done on the cheap.

Also, as we like to think we’re a bit “Counter Cultural”, we thought it would be a good idea to have a “Shop” on opening night where you can buy stuff. A sort of “counter culture “pop up art shop, with obligatory moody assistants. And of course, a counter. Renting a Visa card machine is, ironically enough, beyond our budget, so please bring cash.

Some of our ideas may have been stolen, but theft (or as we like to say, appropriation), is a feature of the show.

As Jean Luc Godard once said …
“ It’s not where you take things from, it’s where you take them to”

We hope to see you there.

* Most of this isn’t strictly true, but the last sentence is.
