OS GEMEOS & BLU IN LISBON

Amazing collaborative piece from Brazillian twins Os Gemeos and Italy's Blu, at least one of whom will be at this years Nuart. This perhaps the best wall we've seen all year. Loving the character sucking the world dry.

EUROTRASH

Now this is one we'd love to attend ! After the storming success of David Choe's show in the same venue, Lazarides are back with what's sure to be a blockbusting event.
Hailing from France, JR will bring his unsurpassable unique vision to Beverley Hills. Immersing himself within cultures where struggle and conflict are rife, he presents his monochromatic photographs, often over 20 feet high on unconventional exhibiting arena’s to highlight humanist matters that are often overlooked.
Cork born painter Conor Harrington goes against the grain of the fast pace of graffiti art preferring to opt for the slower process of oil painting yet never forgetting his street roots. Interested in opposing elements, illusion of power and the emotional side of masculinity, soldiers and conquerors exist within colorful abstracted landscapes.
London based Antony Micallef’s energetic work both celebrates and despises contemporary society. The world portrayed by Micallef is one of contradictions as Barbie becomes the Virgin Mary adorned with a Chanel necklace and cutesy paraphernalia, Angel’s wield guns and Soldiers wear flower power printed uniforms.
Portuguese artist Vhils aka Alexandre Farto is the youngest artist on Lazarides books. Working with manipulating surfaces, whether it is the brick façade of buildings with masonry equipment or layered fly posters that he peels away, he transforms these varying planes to reveal mystifying, striking portraits that explore a cities dimensions.

LOGAN HICKS SHOW

Love this quite introspective vid of Logan, really shows you the man behind the work and is a refreshing change from the usually hip hop heavy soundtracked promo vids. Logan's work has taken a new direction of late, something we saw taking shape during last years Nuart and I for one think it's a really solid, mature and thoughtful progression.
Logan has a new solo show at the Opera Gallery Spring Street, NYC, which opens tonight. Check out the link for some terrific images of the new work.
Press Release
Logan Hicks is a New York-based stencil artist whose work explores the dynamics of the urban environment. Originally a screenprinter, Logan's work has gained notoriety due to his ability to capture the sometimes mundane cycle of city life in a haunting, yet refined way with his hand-sprayed stencils.
Stenciling started as a substitution for screenprinting, but quickly morphed into Logan's medium of choice. A perfect union was conceived by spraypainting stencils his subjects: the dirty and gritty nature of the spraypaint thoroughly depicted the decay of the city while the muted shine of metallic paint mirrored the faint glimmer of hope and life within it. It is this symbiotic relationship with the city that fuels his work.
With his photorealistic style, Logan draws a parallel between the cold, harsh city and a warm, vibrant organism. It is alive; a breathing creature where the ebb and flow of people washing over its sidewalks act as cells circulating through its veins. Buildings block passageways, walls block views, doors hide openings. The outside world is effectively shut out while the city creates its own reality. Confined spaces on subways, honeycomb living structures; it is a labyrinth of working systems limited only by its border, its 'skin'.
Logan uses his art to explore the microcosm in which he is a cell, just part of a whole. The nuances of city life that epitomize the urban existence are what he dwells upon.

ROA IN NYC, FACTORY FRESH SHOW

Belgian Artist Roa is absolutely smashing it at the moment, check his new work above and if in the vicinity of NYC, get down to this evenings opening at Skewville's Factory Fresh gallery.
Our friends over at Brooklynstreetart sent us the first video whilst Roa dropped us the second. BSA have a great little interview with ROA over on their site.

Press Release
This May, Factory Fresh goes wild as it opens its doors to the zoetic art of Belgium-born artist ROA. The artist’s organic animal forms, huge in both their reputation and impact, will grace the walls of the gallery this May, reminding spectators of the forgotten natural world beneath the city’s streets.
Through his large-scale installations of very wild wild-life on the industrial canvas of the city, ROA produces a juxtaposition of the overtly natural against the mechanic that is both feral and nostalgic, a reminiscence of what the world used to be before cement and concrete. ROA is famous for his large black and white works that depict both the outer and inner appearance of rodents, bulls, roaches et al, who slumber on garage doors and cement blocks, copulate in abandoned alleyways and decay on brick walls. His work is sprawling and uncontainable, and will be filling Factory Fresh as such, barely pinned down to found materials, clustering in our corners and escaping out into our surrounding streets.
ROA began pulling animals out of the depths of the industrial world in his hometown of Ghent, Belgium, where he explored the area around his home and was inspired by the life that lurked in its lonely smokestacks. His resulting work snarls at you from wherever it prowls, awaking a visceral reaction that comes from seeing something familiar yet unknown, an uncanny portrayal of the animals within and around ourselves that our contemporary lifestyles have made null.
Since his Belgium beginnings, ROA’s work has hit the ground running like the animals he depicts, scattering on four legs all over major cities, showing up on the walls of galleries and abandoned factories alike. His work has been shown in London, Berlin, Warsaw, and sold out in two days in Paris. He now returns to New York, arriving at a very different kind of factory than the industrial wastelands his animals are known to inhabit, ROA’s show at Factory Fresh promises to be untamed and animated as his pieces.
On view till May 30th.
Cheers guys, and good luck tonight !
