JR IN CHINA !

So, our man JR is in Shangai, can't wait to see what this all about. Maybe a follow on to the Israeli/Palestinian "apartheid" wall (Let's call it what it is hey) and we'll see the great wall of China bombed with images of Tibetans. Either way, love the humanity that shines through these images. Real art for real people !

GUERILLA ART

Guerilla Art: Sebastian Peiter's 60-minute documentary telling how street art went from subway graffiti to international big business.

Buy here

A new generation of street artists are the latest hot property of art collectors and advertising brands. Featuring Futura 2000, Rammellzee, Banksy, Os Gemeos, Space Invader, Barnstormers, Espo, WK Interact, Zevs, Blek Le Rat, André, Noki, Miss Van and Eine.

Filmed in New York, London, Paris, Sao Paulo and Tokyo the documentary introduces the graffiti-inspired street art pioneers Futura, Rammellzee and Blek Le Rat. Art patron Agnés B and art curator Jerome Sans comment on the early days of Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, when graffiti changed the streets of New York and the urban landscapes of the rest of the world.

The film portrays a new generation of street artists led by UK stencil artist Banksy, whose artworks achieve record prices at auction houses like Sotheby’s and who is collected by Damien Hirst and celebrities Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt. Other new street art styles featured are the mosaic tile wall images of Invader, the lyrical folklore inspired murals by Brazilian twins Os Gemeos and the “Visual Kidnappings” of advertising billboards by Parisian artist Zevs.

GUERILLA ART reveals how street artists have developed a unique system of economic survival. Their works are bought by young peers and new collectors. Street artist collective “Pictures on Wall” sells limited-edition prints online and organises the Santa’s Ghetto art sale, filmed right in the centre of London’s shopping district. Once street artists have made a name for themselves, they run their own clothing labels or design special lines for streetwear companies. Futura creates record covers and logos for youth brands. Parisian artist André is a typical cultural entrepreneur running an art store, working on designer toy lines as well as opening clubs in Paris and other cities. Noki creates one-off anti-couture fashion pieces using street art techniques. Rammellzee performs a mythology of his own Gods in clubs and gallery spaces.

“Over the last few years street art has established itself as an art form. But where can this street-based movement go from here, after works by Banksy have been boarded up, chiselled off the walls, to be sold on eBay for money far exceeding the gallery prices?” Tim Marlow - White Cube Gallery Curator.

"I have just found out about the book called GUERILLA ART by Sebastian Peiter, probably one the best books about graffiti and street art concepts. I really like the fact I am part of it. Thanks." WK Interact - Street Artist.

AMAZING 3D GRAFFITI

Graffiti Technica reel from Graffiti Technica on Vimeo.

I don't often use adjectives such as amazing to describe art, but in this case I will. Fantastic idea here that I'd love to see appearing on the streets in the not too distant future.

KAWS AT THE ALDRICH CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM

KAWS @ The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum 6/27/10 Ridgefield, CT from OsirisOrion on Vimeo.

Nice little video of the Kaws show featuring a chap called Yosiell in most shots, apparently could only shoot film if someone was in shot ! Fame at last Yosiell.

KAWS

June 27, 2010, to January 2, 2010

This first solo museum exhibition of the work of Brooklyn-based artist and designer Brian Donnelly, a.k.a. KAWS, includes his most recent paintings, sculptures, and drawings, as well as a survey of his iconic street art, apparel, product and graphic designs.

KAWS's first aesthetic influences came from skateboarding, as did his familiarity with New York City. Around 1991, he started marking his name in different areas of New Jersey and Manhattan. By the time he finished high school, he was mostly focused on graffiti and started intervening on advertising billboards. While exploring new strategies and locations for his work, he obtained a tool for opening bus shelter advertisement boxes. This allowed KAWS to seize the posters, integrate his work, and then replace them. He added an inflated skull with crossed bones and X-ed-out eyes; sometimes the skull was part of a serpentine-looking body that wrapped around the models, a blend that was humorous and daring. Word got around, and when it came to the point where the posters were pulled down and collected almost as soon as KAWS had replaced them, he decided to move on. Next he channeled his creativity into his studio practice, as well as products he developed and distributed on his own and in his boutique in Tokyo, OriginalFake, in partnership with Medicom Toy.

STREETART COOK BOOK

Not really sure what to make of this one as we think you're probably better off developing a style through trial and error, but hell, if it helps a few people get on the first rung of the ladder then why not..wouldn't mind finding a decent wheate paste ourself actually, one that can withstand the vagaries of a Norwegian winter.

From the Press Release

Street Art Cookbook
A Do-It-Yourself bible on street art
by Benke Carlsson & Hop Louie

After hundreds of books containing images of street art, here comes the very first to reveal how it’s done. In 140 pages, 250 pictures and 25 interviews, a dozen techniques are explained. This is the first handbook of tips and tricks for creating street art pieces.

Today, street art is counted among the world’s greatest artistic movements. Simultaneously, it questions who really has the right to participate in public space. Never since the late 60s has an artistic movement challenged the establishment view in this way.

Now, Dokument Press presents the very first book to explain how street art is actually made.
Street Art Cookbook is a guide to the materials and techniques used in the most creative and progressive artistic movement of today. In pictures and interviews with some of the world’s most famous street artists, techniques like spray stencils, stickers, laser graffiti and guerrilla gardening are explained. The Swedish street artist Hop Louie acts as your guide through the book, and explores some of the most complicated techniques. Street Art Cookbook is a source of inspiration to delve into for all those who are interested in DIY.

ROOFTOP BURNER FUND

Some terrific works including this unique Banksy "Nola" have been donated to raise funds for Uk writer Rowdy after a fire pretty much wiped out all of his belongings. The sale is being organised by Stealfromwork and will go live on ebay from the 24th.

From the website

So, there are plenty of charity events, plenty of causes worth fighting for, whole countries at war.... But sometimes it’s just about helping your friends, helping those you love. And here we’re taking the opportunity to help one of our best friends.

If you don’t know, here’s the introduction. Rowdy is one of the longest standing players in UK graffiti, supporting the scene and playing his part in what has now turned into a global phenomenon. He has painted with the best of them, in fact is one of the best of them, always sticking true to his vision, rocking his own style, never selling out his ideas. Recently he walked out of his house, which also served as his studio and when he returned a half hour later, everything had been burned to the ground. EVERYTHING! ID, money, clothes, personal possessions, art, the ability to make art, everything gone!

So, we’re taking this as an opportunity to support someone who has so readily supported us as a scene by auctioning some art to help him get back to a position where he can do what he does best, making art.

It’s a testament to his popularity and reputation that so many artists have donated work to this auction. All work has been personally donated by the artists and the galleries that represent them: Banksy, Paul Insect, Swoon, Sickboy, Hush, Espo, the whole Burning Candy crew and a whole bunch more... So, it’s your chance to buy something beautiful and at the same time help out someone who has helped in his way to make graffiti and street art what it is today.

BLU IN MADRID

Nu from Blu, can't wait to see what's in store for Nuart 2010

"I was invited to paint in this fantastic place called “esta es una plaza”. The place was basically an empty abandoned space, left from the demolition of an old buildings many years ago
the collective from “esta es una plaza” decided to occupy the place and turn it into a useful public space for everyone
they now organize activities every week, have a nice garden, fruit trees, and many kinds of vegetables

they also had this great empty wall available for painting,

i never understood if they really had permission to paint it or not,
anyway the lift was already there, no time for silly questions…"

INCOMING : BARRY MCGEE/CLARE ROJAS SHOW

Barry McGee and Clare Rojas are internationally exhibited artists and cult figures.
They often come to Bolinas to unwind and rejuvenate their spirits.

This exhibition is an installation by each of them.

Barry McGee "Leave it Alone"

A lauded and much-respected cult figure in a bi-coastal subculture that comprises skaters, graffiti artists, and West Coast surfers, Barry McGee was born in 1966 in California, where he continues to live and work. In 1991 he received a BFA in painting and printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. His drawings, paintings, and mixed-media installations take their inspiration from contemporary urban culture, incorporating elements such as empty liquor bottles and spray-paint cans, tagged signs, wrenches, and scrap wood or metal. McGee is also a graffiti artist, working on the streets of America’s cities since the 1980s, where he is known by the tag name “Twist.” He views graffiti as a vital method of communication, one that keeps him in touch with a larger, more diverse audience than can be reached through the traditional spaces of a gallery or museum. His trademark icon, a caricatured male figure with sagging eyes and a bemused expression, recalls the homeless people and transients who call the streets their home. “Compelling art to me is a name carved into a tree,” says McGee. His work has been shown at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the UCLA/Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and on streets and trains all over the United States.

Clare Rojas: "Together at Last"

Rojas’ art career has taken her around the world and back again. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design, and later went on to earn her Master’s degree from the Art Institute of Chicago before finally settling down in San Francisco. She has received numerous accolades for her work, including the prestigious Tournasol Award and grants from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and Joan Mitchell Foundation. She has had solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects, New York City; the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Massachusetts; MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León), Spain; Museum Het Doemien, Netherlands and various international group exhibitions.

Rojas plays music too. Under the pseudonym Peggy Honeywell she has released two CDs of her own bluegrass/country music on the Galaxia label. Clare Rojas recently exhibited new paintings in her signature gouache technique placing figures in a crisp and colorful landscape. Combining features of cartoon and folk art... Rojas blends ironic spice into the expected charm of her visual treats.

NU RECOMMENDS #1: JEREMY GEDDES

Thought we'd start a series of posts that though not related to street art, still arouse that "outsider" feeling in us. We stumbled across Jeremy's work at last years HK show and recently picked up a few prints, the quality of which was second to none. His paintings are next to impossible to get hold of, but his prints are incredibly well priced and even better, postage is included. It's kinda like having a JG Ballard novel hanging on the wall, and no, we don't mean "Empire of the Sun".

HERAKUT, SHOWTIME

Great to see Nuart regulars "Herakut" back with what looks like by far their most ambitious show to date.

Opening : Friday June 11th at Dusseldorf's Springmann Varol Gallery

From The Gallery

The dynamic art duo "Herakut" proudly present "Happy Doubt Day!" at Düsseldorf's Springmann Varol gallery, Friday the 11th of June. The art exhibit features 20+ new canvas paintings, wood pieces, sculptures and additional installations, showcasing herakut's unique, intensely original output.

German artists hera and akut have been operating under the name of "herakut" since 2004, when they began producing collaborative pieces in the burgeoning urban art scene.

The visual and textual content of their work is an insightful expression of their generation's mental state. Much of their subject matter involves narrative and character studies involving multilayered textual explorations. herakut are masters of creating independent, self-contained worlds full of melancholy and profound humor. And in doing so, they see themselves as a part of an overall cultural movement, without any artistic barriers between a wide array of mediums, be it drawing, text, music or film.

Through the strength of their work, coupled with the demand for their style, herakut have moved beyond producing strictly "street art", and are now regarded as some of the most exciting contemporary artists of our time. Yet they have maintained the respect of the street art community, and they reciprocate that respect by continuing to create with spray cans, even as their artistic sphere of operation has grown to include interior spaces. Herakut's figurative and oftentimes photo-realistic paintings evolve out of a mixing technique on several image carriers, combining canvas, wood and/or paper. They also create collages and large scale, room filling installations.

Herakut live and work in Munich and Frankfurt.

LOGAN HICKS PRINT RELEASE

New print release from Logan Hicks set to drop tomorrow.

This print will be available at www.jetsetgraffiti.com on June 9th, 2010.
Release is at 12PM PST, 3PM EST, 8PM GMT

Press

Known around the world as one of the hardest working artists alive, Logan is among the most talented contemporary artists today. His vision is exacting, and his standards are extremely high. After months of discussions, we decided to use a special Liquid Graphite Pigment with Silver Flake to provide the solid slate-like feel that Logan wanted in this print while maintaining a sense of depth and variation that is so important to his artwork. The results are striking. As a special variation for the collectors, we also printed 15 with Gold Metallic inks.

The edition was created at Modern Multiples Studio in Los Angeles under the supervision of Master Printer, Richard Duardo. Video Edited by Kevin Chapados, Directed by Chunwoo Kae, Produced by Daniel Lahoda for JetSet Graffiti Productions in Brooklyn, New York.

BEATEN CITY BY PENNY

A great image and concept from artist Penny, it's work like this that keeps the street art flame burning brightly for us here at Nuart towers (more of a shed actually..but hey). Take this work and stick it any art institution on the planet and it would more than hold it's own. The fact that it's on the street raises the game and the work to a whole different level. Truly a great piece of Contemporary City Art.

NEW BANKSY ? NO, it's by PRIEST !

Saw this tweeted earlier today, not 100% where it is. Fantastically topical and a great piece of work.

Thanks to everyone for pointing out that this piece is by the artist Priest and NOT Banksy. Even better in our opinion. Check Priest's photostream below, some great pieces !
