HELLS HALF ACRE

HELLS HALF ACRE

Launching the 12th October, Lazarides in collaboration with The Old Vic Tunnels invites you to their newest off-site exhibition, Hell's Half Acre.

The labyrinth of tunnels beneath Waterloo station will be converted into a large-scale evocation of Dante's Inferno. Visitors will explore a unique interpretation of the nine circles of hell through the vision of your very favorite Laz artists plus additional contributions from outside the normal roster including: Conor Harrington, Vhils, George Osodi, Antony Micallef, Doug Foster, Todd James, Paul Insect, Mark Jenkins, Boogie, Ian Francis, Polly Morgan, Jonathan Yeo and many more ... Interaction with the works will be encouraged as part of this multi-sensory experience.

Hell's Half Acre will be open for viewing from 12th to 17th October, 6pm till 11pm Tuesday to Thursday, with extended hours over the weekend. Entry to the exhibition will be free, but as space is limited you will need to book ahead.

For more information, please read the press release.

JOSÈ PARLA THE CONCORD PROJECT

Not sure if I fully understand this project, but seems Jose Parla has been commissioned by Concord Pacific, Canada's largest Community builder" to produce a mural for one of their development projects. The work is immense and looks pretty amazing. Look forward to seeing the piece in situ.

KNOW HOPE & SHOW AND TELL

I first stumbled across my first Know Hope in Palestine back in 2006, a small paste up on the side of the road next to the wall, and though I was surrounded by large scale works from Banksy, Blu, Swoon and numerous other internationally recognised artists, it was this small A2 paste up of a character holding his heart out to the wall that really struck home, it was also the reason we invited him to participate in the following Nuart Festival.

Know Hope - There Is Nothing Dear (There Is Too Much Dear)

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome the Israeli artist known as Know Hope to his first solo exhibition in Canada.

Know Hope is best known for his street art, in which he depicts characters through several different story lines. The predominant theme within his work is the need for momentary connection in daily reality. Or, in other words, the everyday human struggle.

This exhibition examines the idea of the collective memory in comparison to the personal memory. Through the growing but steady vocabulary of imagery in his work, Know Hope attempts to research how and why we tend to hang on to memory, despite it having an inevitable ephemeral nature.

Know Hope has exhibited his art interenationally in galleries, art fairs, and on the streets around the world.

NATE FRIZZELL

Nate Frizzell ‘I Should Know Who I Am By Now’

Artist Nate Frizzell opens his second solo exhibition with the gallery after
recent shows in the UK and New York. The new exhibit continues to
revolve around the themes of self-discovery through an examination of
the human condition.

The exploration of personal identity and individual choices made over
the course of a lifetime are viewed in Frizzell’s winter themed paintings
and his first sculptural elements.

BROOKLYN STREET ART INTERVIEW

Recently had the pleasure of answering a few questions from Street Art partners in crime over at Brooklyn Street Art.

From BROOKLYN STREET ART
Art Saves lives

The small but very expensive (if you are not a resident) and oil rich Coastal town of Stavenger in Norway must be feeling a bit blue right now. Nuart 2010 artists cleaned up, packed up their tools and left after two weeks of painting monumental murals for the town’s folk to enjoy during the long, dark winter months ahead.

This years’ Street Artists included Dotmasters, Dolk, EVOL, Sten & Lex, Vhils, and ROA, among others. As in the past 5 years under this curator, the ‘10 group is a stellar selection of talent that is helping define what direction Street Art is heading.

The offerings this year were super sized and in many cases bold in color. All of the participants this year were painters, masters at their craft and supremely independent. Martyn Reed, curator and visionary engine behind this elaborate but accessible street art festival doesn’t limit himself to one large festival – instead he marries it with a prestigious electronic-based music festival he created as a result of his years as a DJ. This years’ NuMusic festival featured performances by luminaries like Krautrock grandaddies Neu! and American hip-hop cornerstone Grandmaster Flash.

The affable bad boy Reed took a moment this week to look at his route to success so far and tell BSA about what the Nuart festival is and why it is important to him.

Brooklyn Street Art: Putting on a festival of this magnitude must be a big task. How do you do it?

Martyn Reed: Actually...

VHILS CLOSE UP

Nuart Tour-35, originally uploaded by Jollyaard.
Great close up of the Vhils piece. The portrait is a very well known image of a Norwegian fisherman from the turn of the century, turned out that the wall we were working on used to be a factory for packing sardines, Stavanger's prime industry at the time.

The owner of the wall was shocked to find we had two Portuguese artists painting a Norwegian fisherman and proceeded to produce an old label from a Sardine can written in Portuguese. Apparently it used to be the factories main export country.

A happy coincidence or a very clever curatorial decision, we'll let you decide.

TRESPASS : A VIDEO INTRODUCTION

Nice little video introduction to the Trespass book by Taschen, particularly like the quote from Martha Cooper, " I think the common thread amongst all the artists in the book, no matter what they were doing, is that their urge to do it was more powerful than any kind of rule or regulation against doing it".

Trespass: A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art featuring interviews by Marc and Sara Schiller (Wooster Collective) Carlo McCormick, WK Interact, Anne Pasternak, Martha Cooper.

DOLK FOR NUART 2010

The first large scale Dolk went up in Stavanger during this years Nuart, this was shot shortly after completion and is the final piece on the Nuart "Landmark" tour. Unfortunately rain from hell fell from the skies before, during and after, well, we say fell, it actually rained sideways, and the work took a serious beating. Whilst we're all for the natural degradation of Street Art and believe it's a natural part of the aesthetic, we're still considering touching this one up.

NUART "LANDMARK" TOUR

The town's people turned out in force on Sunday for the first of Nuart's "Landmark" street art tours. Thanks to Carl Fredrick for shooting this great little vid and to speakers Kristal and GT for their impressive dedication to the cause !

STREET ART to take over MOCA's Geffen Contemporary in 2011

From LAtimes

Anyone wondering what Jeffrey Deitch's next step will be as the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art now has an answer. In two words: street art.

Local artists and gallery owners have been whispering about the possibility, and this week Deitch confirmed his plans for a 2011 show. "We're going to send out the press release in a few weeks," he says. "Right now we're trying to iron out sponsorship. It's going to be the first major museum survey of the history of graffiti and street art presented in the United States."

The show is called "Art in the Streets," not to be confused with "Born in the Streets," recently staged by the Cartier Foundation in Paris. Deitch says the MOCA endeavor will be bigger, broader and more historical in sweep. "A show at this level has never been done anywhere."

The choice of subject is no surprise to anyone who knows Deitch. Since the 1970s, he has supported New York artists like Lee Quinones, Futura, Fab 5 Freddy, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. More recently, Deitch Projects, his former gallery, showed the work of California anti-heroes Barry McGee and Shepard Fairey.

The MOCA show will cover the 1970s through the present, including international street-art stars such as Banksy from London and Space Invader from Paris. ("Banksy is very excited about the show,” says Deitch. How does he know, considering Banksy's notoriously elusive nature? "We communicate through his assistant Holly.")

But also expect a substantial focus on Los Angeles: the legacy of cholo graffiti in the 1970s, the
influence of New York Wild Style graffiti starting in the '80s and skateboarding-fueled art of the '90s.

"About 25 artists will be invited to do major installations or murals," says MOCA's director. “But in terms of all the artists represented there will be more than 100." One installation already confirmed: Mister Cartoon's Ice Cream Truck, shown above, the work of an L.A. graffiti artist now famous for creating tattoos for the famous (think Eminem and Beyoncé).

To organize the exhibition, Deitch is working with two L.A.-based curators: Aaron Rose of "Beautiful Losers" renown and graffiti guru Roger Gastman. Fred Brathwaite, better known as Fab 5 Freddy, is serving as a curatorial advisor from New York.

Rose says he’s excited to see MOCA take street art seriously. “Because there’s a criminal edge or outlaw vibe, it doesn’t get the same respect that art coming out of academia gets," he says. "But you can’t deny the cultural importance it has had in art, music and fashion of the last 20 years.”

He thinks the exhibition has huge crossover potential to reach new museumgoers in the city's Latino and African American communities, and teenagers across the map. "I don’t think MOCA has done anything on this scale," Rose says. "The sheer number of kids who will come to this museum will be mind-blowing.”

The show is slated to open at MOCA's Geffen Contemporary in April 2011. "I decided I had to do this in my first season at MOCA," Deitch says. "I didn't want to waste time opening up the museum to a larger audience."

PRINCESS HIJAB

Though we're currently in the midst of our busiest period here at Nuart towers, we still hope to find the time to post up some of Street Art's more interesting projects whilst we run. Princess Hijab is striking at the heart of advertising and Sarkozy's nasty little policies towards the "other" by placing the "other" directly in front of commuters ! Seems to be saying "There's nothing to fear, but fear itself". A brave project with little or no resources that is turning the power of advertising in on itself.

Princess Hijab,
a documentary following the artist bringing veils to the faces of Paris.

From Babelgum

As the French Senate approve a ban on burqas, we profile the anonymous Parisian graffiti artist whose work 'hijabizing' adverts raises the question of why hiding a face behind a veil is considered to be more of a repressive act than hiding one behind airbrushing and media gloss.

NEW BANKSY WORKS.. HMV

A couple of new Banksy pieces being used to promo the DVD at HMV on Oxford Street. A long way from his early "HMV" piece which was a seemingly more critical look at the company and corporate music biz practice. Maybe I'm missing something here, but feels pretty demeaning towards the genre we've grown to know and love. I can live with "Street Art" being product, but not for shifting product, regardless of whose it is.
