SAFEWALLS

SAFEWALLS TEASER from SAFEWALLS on Vimeo.

SAFEWALLS

Not really sure what to make of this, but Cirque Du Soleil, the once street based performance troupe turned multi billion dollar global entertainment corporation, have created "Safewalls". A series of commission based works inspired by the brand from, so far, unnamed international "street" and "low brow" artists. Had this been 1984, it may have made some sense and proved relevant. Had it been 2004, maybe a little less so.. but 2011 ? and the company being part owned by private equity investment companies..well..I guess we'll have to see the work before we pass judgement, but at first sight it seems questionable. No doubt the production values, as this pr video proves, will be far above and beyond what most of those involved in the scene can muster. Seems to be quite a risky project that could backfire. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

PS : oh yeah, almost forgot, there will be limited edition prints available.

BANKSY PRINT "CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON"

So here's a few shots of the new Banksy works courtesy of Banksy.info. including the new "Choose your Weapon" print at bottom.

NEW BANKSY PRINT "CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON"

Sneak peak of what looks like Banksy's new print. "Choose your weapon". It's the red work you can see directly behind the chap in blue, sitting pretty under the Date farmers print and looks to be a print version of the Haring dog that appeared earlier this year.

BANKSY/MARKS & STENCILS UPDATE

MARKS & STENCILS
TONIGHT, 25TH NOVEMBER, SOHO, LONDON 1900-2200
PICTURESONWALLS

A lot of messages requesting the address.. it's now public so..

1 Berwick Street, London W1.
Open: Monday - Saturday 11am-7pm Sunday 12-5pm
Nearest tube: Oxford Circus/Leicester Square
Doors open from 11am this Friday for four weeks only.

From Channel 4 Blog ON THE TOP IMAGE.

This is the image designed to provoke, intrigue and shock people – and get them to spend money on street art – in this year’s Christmas show curated by Banksy called “Marks and Stencils” in London’s Soho. It is by a young artist called Mark Sinckler who will be doing an interview with our reporter Stephanie West for tonight’s programme about his motivations and thoughts behind the image. Obviously it is potentially offensive to some people. Others will find it thought provoking and even beautiful. It will certainly stir a debate about using such an image from a horroric tragedy like the 7/7 bombings for what is essentially a commercial project.

The pop up show is the successor to the Santa’s Ghettos that sold affordable street art in past years and opens to the public on Friday November 26th - the Sinckler image is huge and will be unveiled in the window tonight to identify the show. It also features the French street artist Dran and there will apparently be some new pieces by Banksy unveiled as well.

MARKS & STENCILS

Preview night tonight for Picturesonwalls DRAN show with supporting works from Banksy himself. A few teaser shots doing the rounds, scroll down. Dran's show opens to the public on Friday 26th and is titled "My Everyday life".. secret location. Marks & Stencil's previews tonight and opens to the public tomorrow, secret location. I can only guess that both two shows are one and the same. Though perhaps not..

Check out below for some more DRAN action...

Banksy and Pictures on Walls usual annual Santa's Ghetto event is maybe just around the corner, or maybe this is part of this weeks Dran show where we heard Banksy would also be showing. Who knows. Certainly looks like a Banksy work though now doesn't it ?

FEATURED : AARON ROSE

AARON ROSE

I recently stumbled upon Aaron Rose's newish photo blog and there was something about it that immediately struck a chord. A lot of the time we can get hooked up on the "history" and sense of hierarchy that goes with this "scene", graf, street art, outsider art.. low brow, new brow.. call it what you will. But, there's something about the quality of this work, that is just truly..art. You really get the feeling that here's a guy, who could be seriously down on his luck in every imaginable way..and yet.. would still be shooting film.

Anyway.. enough of my rambling.

Check out the blog Here
Beautiful Losers Here

Aaron Rose is a film director, art show curator and writer who is a key part of the Beautiful Losers art movement, which has featured and helped notarize the work of artists such as Barry McGee, Steven "Espo" Powers, Harmony Korine and Shepard Fairey. In 2005, he published with Drago, Young Sleek and Full of Hell, where he collects over 100 artists including Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton, Thomas Campbell, Phil Frost, Spike Jonze, Sofia Coppola, Sonic Youth, Terry Richardson.

He was co-curator of the Beautiful Losers touring art exhibit, and edited the collected art book—released by Iconoclast and Distributed Art Publishers in 2004 featuring the work and artists of the tour. The exhibition toured the world through 2009. He is also the director of the documentary film Beautiful Losers, which began its US theatrical run in 2008.

DOLK AT BERGEN KUNSTMUSEUM

DOLK AT BERGEN ART MUSEUM

Nice to see our very own DOLK exhibiting his stencils as part of BGO1 at Bergen Kunstmuseum.

From the Press Sheet
The exhibition BGO1 is this fall’s extravaganza at Bergen Art Museum. It is backgrounded by recent years’ developments in the Bergen art scene, with more and more newly educated artists choosing to establish themselves in Bergen, studio cooperatives forming, alternative galleries taking root, new educational opportunities and new cross-disciplinary arenas.

GRAFFITI EDUCATION COMMUNITY

KIDS WITH GUNS

We rarely post about graffiti here at Nuart, not for any other reason than we're pretty ignorant about the whole thing and generally have little or nothing to do with it. However, in response to the first video which we posted up on our facebook site, we received the second one. One of the most powerful life affirming reasons we've ever seen to pick up a can.

JOSÉ PARLA & ARKITIP

PARLA AT WORK

Arkitip join forces with incase and José Parla. Not too interested in the product, but the video is cool, great to see the process behind his work.

José Parlá Sleeve
Curated by Arkitip, Produced by Incase
José Parlá is an artist who records his experiences in calligraphic and palimpsestic code. Serving as a collection of textually chronicled memories, the markings appear on backdrops that resemble the distressed surfaces he encounters. As a storyteller, Parlá presents an enigmatic narrative, translating moments that only a visual dialogue can convey.

Incidentally Arkitip's Parla issue 33 is still available Here

Yesterday was the deadline for the local councils application for cultural funding. Here's a peak at what Nuart submitted. Fingers crossed it manages to convince them not to cut support in these times of austerity.

SWOON TO BUILD HOUSE

SWOON BUILDS A HOUSE

From Nola.com

Better known by her street-art alias Swoon, Curry is a New York-based superstar renowned for her alluring large-scale drawings of mythological men and women that she sticks to public walls with school paste. Hers is a kinder, gentler form of graffiti. Swoon also is famous for the rag-tag rafts and boats built from recyclables that she and friends float from place to place as a sort of nautical performance art.

She now plans to build a house on Piety Street. If the finished structure turns out anything like the charming doll-house-sized model, it will be a towering pixie temple with a star-shaped floor plan, a zigzag wrap-around porch and pointy cupola, adorned with assorted dormers and flying filigree. The house is meant to double as a domicile for visiting artists and a sort of walk-in musical instrument complete with built-in percussion machines and electronic tone producers of some sort.

Swoon, whose work is characterized in part by its temporary nature, acknowledged that she has “personally never tried to create a permanent house, a permanent structure.” She was invited to New Orleans by Delaney Martin (director of New Orleans Airlift, an organization meant to help artists travel), and has spent six months in cahoots with kinetic artist Taylor Shepherd, architect Wayne Troyer and others to make her dreamy dream-house a reality.

As she and Shepherd laughingly explained at their warehouse studio earlier this week, the house lacks a name, a construction schedule and sufficient funding. But considering Swoon’s past triumphs, we shouldn’t be surprised to see the whimsical design someday join the Crescent City’s list of architectural marvels.

MANHOLE STREETART

MANHOLE STREETART

Seems that not all corporate involvement with Street Art has to be completely retarded.
Milan's largest Fibre Optic company Metroweb have again sponsored the production of a series of street art designed manhole covers. 20 covers from the following 5 international street artists are dotted around the city.

The London Police (UK)
Shepard Fairey (USA)
Space Invader (France)
Rendo (Italy)
Flying Fortress (Germany)

The covers will stay in place for between 1 and 2 years or until someone manages to find a way to steal them. They're forged in metal so beware of postage charges for future ebay sales.

Check out all 20 on thedonblog here
