OLEK's CROCHETED BULL
As many Americans were spending Christmas night with their families, Olek, a New York based artist was near Wall Street, freezing her fingers to the bone while outfitting the famous "Charging Bull" into a giant knitted cozy.
Why did she feel compelled to crochet a sweater for the brass Bull? Partly, it was because of the economy and partly because she was homesick.
From CNN
OLEK
My work changes from place to place. I studied the science of culture. With a miner's work ethic, I long to delve deeper and deeper into my investigations. My art was a development that took me away from industrial, close-minded Silesia, Poland. It has always sought to bring color and life, energy, and surprise to the living space. My goal is to produce new work and share it with the public. I intend to take advantage of living in NYC with various neighborhoods and, with my actions, create a feedback to the economic and social reality in our community.

OS GEMEOS IN FRANCE 2007-2010
FROM OS GEMEOS
The Moulin is a unique project, in constant transformation and construction. With an infinity of projects, from construction to decoration of the rooms (done by different invited artists), paintings, installations, garden projects, Land Art, shows and private parties that happen every year… We were invited to participate in this project in 2007, when we painted the façade of the Wattermill and made an installation in side of the tower…
Now we have a new challenge, to transform an old trailer into “Slava’s head”. This work will be part of a project called “Dépayz’arts” which will be hedl between 27 and 31st of december 2010, with some of the best theater, dance, music, installation and street theatre groups. www.depayzarts.com

TEXT : HYPEBEAST
The always controversial and talked about Barry McGee was among the artists who were invited to TRANSFER SP in Brazil. Creating his own specific installation, Barry McGee went about his work only at night with no real pre-determined path. Instead, the artist created a piece of work unlike his most familiar and recent works over the last few years. Here’s a video that captures his night time processes and approach.

It appears KAWS has gifted the Northeast with a Giant Companion for the Holiday Season. First featured during his Hong Kong exhibit, Passing Through (covered), the 16 foot fiberglass sculpture has concluded a long journey to the US by settling down on the snowy lawn of The Aldrich Contemporary Museum where it joined the rest of the work already on display for the artist’s first museum solo exhibition.

One of the most affordable Swoon prints in sometime, for a very worthy cause and if you get your order in now, you may have it time for Xmas.

The Walki Print for The Konbit Shelter Project.
New York based artist, Swoon, has teamed with creative lifestyle brand, Upper Playground, to release the limited edition Walki print - 100% of the proceeds from the print will go towards support of The Konbit Shelter Project.
The Walki print is an immediately touching portrait by Swoon of a boy named Walki who lives in the village of Bigones and spent time with the Konbit Shelter team at the community center building site this last summer. The print is made of a three-layer screenprint on handmade Indian jute paper measuring 13" x 21" and is limited at an edition of 300 - all proceeds from the sale will go towards support of the Konbit Shelter Project.
The print will only be on sale for a limited time until January 1st and is priced affordably at $125 so that as many people as possible can be involved with this unique project. The print is available exclusively here.
UPPERPLAYGROUND
The Konbit Shelter Project
The Konbit Shelter Project was created with the idea that a group of artists, engineers, architects and builders could pool their individual knowledge, resources and time to make a lasting difference in post- earthquake Haiti. Konbit Shelter is a rebuilding initiative, which uses dome- style structures and the super-adobe technique of earth bag architecture to create sustainable, inexpensive and dependable housing for the people of Haiti. While the structures are extremely resistant to natural disasters, they also have the major benefit of being comprised of 90% earth and requiring no specialized scaffolding and understructure to build - making it a viable option for the people of Haiti to continue building on their own once they learn the method.

MAD C 700 WALL
700 Wall - Final Update from Molotow on Vimeo.
Wow.. just wow.
FROM MAD C
Here we are, the wall is done! Even though I decided to paint a little further still - I just finished it before the snow set in. The wall was originally planned to end at the set of windows since those are difficult to involve and the surface of the wall became pretty bad from thereon too. However, I decided to extend my theme in places and take the challenge to paint until the very end of the wall. Now it is about 680m2 of wall space.
Finally, the picture is complete and I hope the story sums up. My Stylemachine-idea was based on the life of a dedicated graffiti writer. It's a wall for all of us who paint 10+ years and who put all their energy and heart into it.

ALEXANDROS VASMOULAKIS
NEW FROM ALEXANDROS VASMOULAKIS & MANOLIS ANASTASKOS
Alexandros (Nuart2010) just sent us this video piece of his latest action.
"During 2010, Greece came under the supervision of IMF and EU. The fear of poverty and financial recession has built up a feeling of social unrest. Memories of the Greek riots of 2008, according to the media, have created the expectation in Greece and abroad, of a new, more violent riot.
Influenced by this atmosphere, we created in a deserted ceramics factory in Athens a series of actions during May 2010. At the time we wanted to give form to feelings intuitively provoked by the signs of unrest we received from all around us. We used the objects that were plentifully scattered in the ruins of the factory: red powder, ceramics, wood and ropes. We installed sculptural structures and we recorded, on video, short collision-scenes. Red powder represented the outcome of every human violent act. The deserted industrial setting was used as a metaphor for the financially devastated country. The multiple-screens structure of the video is a reminder of the surveillance cameras used by the police. The sound was recorded live during each of the actions.
We doubt the efficiency of violent rioting and search for a new way. Essentially we have found nothing yet, however, we enjoy searching".
BLU WALL CONTROVERSY
There's an interesting debate developing regarding Jeffrey Deitch's/MOCA's decision to erase/censor/whitewash the artist Blu's work from the side of their museum, this in spite of it being a legal and commissioned work from the Museum itself. The work was produced as part of the upcoming survey on Street Art curated by Jeffrey Deitch to be showcased in April.
Surprisingly, the quite influential and much read street art blog Vandalog, has come out in favour of the decision to remove the work.
Most of our readers will already be aware of who Jeffrey Deitch is and his contribution to promoting this particular type of art, the rumour mill of his producing a show of this type for MOCA was underway almost as soon as he accepted the post. Having worked with Blu in the past, Deitch will no doubt be aware of the direction this particular artists moral compass swings, so to come out now and unilaterally censor its production leads to all sorts of questions. The main being, just how out of touch is Deitch with the development of Street Art outside of his earlier quite narrow field. Some have mentioned that this is all part of a manufactured PR scam which I think we can discount straight away. Blu simply doesn't engage in that type of game.
One abiding question regarding the upcoming show will inevitably be, not what was curated in and why, but what was left out. Will work that is critical of America, War and the prevailing system be left aside in favour of the more decorative. Remains to be seen.
UPDATE : BLU RESPONDS TO DEITCH CLAIMS
In a Times' report on MOCA's controversial decision to whitewash an antiwar mural it had commissioned for the Geffen Contemporary, museum director Jeffrey Deitch discusses his reasons for painting over the artwork.
Blu, the Italian street artist who created the mural, could not be reached for comment by press time. But after the story went to press, I received the following e-mail, addressing the question of whether he considers the removal of his mural censorship:
It is censorship that almost turned into self-censorship when they asked me to openly agree with their decision to erase the wall. In Soviet Union they were calling it 'self-criticism.'
Deitch invited me to paint another mural over the one he erased, and I will not do that..
Maybe this can be a call to arms for an uncurated or mediated action for Street Artists to fill the wall up with whatever they want, in spite of the show. Go get it guys..turn it into a new spring street for 2011.

NEW BANKSY PRINT "CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON"

That new Banksy print everyone's been waiting for is finally released. Register online HERE for a choice of three colourways, or turn up in person tomorrow for a choice of 8. Edition size, 25 of each apart from Grey which is 100.
Each print is £450.00 but if it's any consolation Banksy is donating all royalties to the VOINA artist cooperative in Russia, two of whom are currently residing in a St Petersburg jail. VOINA are the people who drew a giant penis on a road bridge opposite the KGB headquarters and protested against police corruption by overturning eleven patrol cars in one night.
Find out more about them HERE.

MOCA DESTROY BLU WORK
More news on LA's Museum of Contemporary Art's whitewashing of Blu's latest mural. Blu had flown to LA to create the work for MOCA who seem to have decided it wasn't what the people of America needed, and all this within 24 hours. A nasty case of censorship combined with a massive dose of disrespect for the burgeoning Street Art scene. Imagine had the same happened to Picasso's Guernica.

SWOON ZAHRA RELEASE
SWOON : NEW PRINT ASSEMBLAGE : ZAHRA
Released today on Papermonster, 12 noon NYC time.
See more here
An all time favourite and can be found on the streets not too far from our office. Terrific to see the work that has gone into these and that this isn't "just another xmas print drop".
From the Press Release
This release will feature a series of unique variants based on Swoon's iconic Zahra image. As you may recall we have mentioned this project in the past couple of emails and are pleased to finally release these pieces on the site.
To give you a little background, the project started out consisting of an edition of cut & dyed paper pieces designed to be layered on top of one another to create an assemblage print. The initial idea was to chine-collé a series of 3 cut elements onto a heavy printing paper to create the central Zahra image. As the project progressed and Swoon became more and more involved, we ended up handing her a stack of intricately cut japanese paper pieces to play around with and crossed our fingers they would stay in tact while she experimented. What she brought back to us a couple of months later we were blown away by.
This edition of 31 unique variants include works on found wood, fabric, cardboard and paper. The pieces themselves consist of a variety of these elements collaged to form a backing onto which the central Zarha paper-cut image is applied. Not all of the elements made it into each piece, and many were embellished with scraps and free-cut paper forms Swoon pulled from her travels and studio work. Below are a few preview photos to better illustrate these pieces.

STYLE WARS REMAKE
STYLE WARS REMADE BY SWEDISH SCHOOL KIDS.
This made us smile. The best school project we've ever seen that deals with the contentious issue of teaching and discussing graffiti in schools.
This video was a school project at Spinneriet in Malmo, Sweden. It's a remake of “Style Wars,” the seminal documentary produced by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant in New York City in 1983 on graffiti and hip-hop culture.
Incidentally, there's a campaign to save and restore the original film. Details below.

EPOS 257. 50 SQUARE METERS. 54 DAYS.
Just received news on a really interesting urban intervention project from Epos 257 in Prague. Street Art at its best, question everything.
Images and website here
50 square meters of the public space.
The appropriation of public space with no apparent intent.
Duration: 54 days (September 04 - October 27, 2010)
Location: Palackeho square, Prague - the so-called "Czech Hyde Park" - allegedly the most liberal spot in the country, approved by the authorities for holding any unannounced public gatherings.
Have we grown accustomed to having our living space curbed by just anyone? Is public space a mere myth?
In the current society, our living space is defined by legal norms and regulations, the same way as fences demark the choices of our free movement.
Only by attempting to cross those boundaries, we learn how limited the space we live in really is - that we are not as free as it may initially seem. We are getting the sense that the individuality of today is destined to an existence amidst restrictions.
