HOW TO SELL A BANKSY

Though they may be laughing since the Oscar nomination, you just know everyone involved in this project is a first class c**k. The only surprise here, is that the otherwise excellent Howie B soundtracked it.

Next, how we tried to sell our grandmother...

From the film makers

There is only one rule: There are no rules. That's entertainment. Everyone is an opportunist to some degree, and if you are the guy trying to sell a Banksy, you might as well make a documentary. And if you want to intellectualize it ""HOW TO SELL A BANKSY" raises questions of ownership, authentication and the true value of art itself," says the filmmaker

SWOON DEBUT SHOW IN AUSTRALIA

METRO GALLERY VICTORIA AUSTRALIA

SWOON

Opening night Feburary 16th 2011, 6.30pm - 8.30pm.
Swoon will be in attendence.
This is Swoon's first solo exhibition in Australia.

Looks like the work is already online and for sale.

Swoon has been working on the streets of New York City for over 10 years, creating large scale paste-ups of the every day inhabitants of the Big Apple. She uses traditional print making techniques to reproduce these beautiful images at life size before hitting the streets to create her own unique, narrative driven cityscape. Swoon also ensures that each piece she creates is inherently unique by physically cutting details into her works, this process of subtraction allows the pieces to take on a life of their own on the street because the textures and tones of the surface they are pasted on then become integral to the construction of the work themselves. While the method of her work is indebted to both traditional craftsmanship and classic painterly technique, her execution is entirely modern. It is this method of incorporating both age old techniques and contemporary graffiti practice that makes her work so compelling, not to mention highly sought after. She has contributed work to MOMA, Art Basel Miami, and the Brooklyn museum.

KAWS LIGHTBULBS !

KAWS LIGHTBULB FOR THE STANDARD HOTEL.

It's rare that we post up "product" related to street and urban art, and vinyl toys for that matter. However, this couldn't go without comment. No doubt it will have it's "selling out" detractors, but that would be missing the point of just how genius we think this is. A truly brilliant concept that for us, transcends most "urban" product that has gone before it.

Re-inventing the lightbulb ! No mean feat and shows just how ubiquitous the XX has become.

These could quite easily have been a one off stand alone conceptual art piece that would have slotted into numerous high end art exhibitions, the fact they're an affordable consumable object of desire in a limited edition of 1000 only add's to their relevance. Move over Haring and Koons.

PRESS RELEASE

The Standard's series of artist editions continues with Brooklyn-based artist, KAWS. This is a limited, but non-numbered edition of 1,000 sets that contain 3 bulbs each, of one bulb in each color: red, purple and green.

The 3 watt bulbs have a warm low glow. Dimensions of each globe is about 4.75" x 2.25" and they screw into any standard incandescent fixture. We love how they look on a light string using multiple sets. The bulbs are individually boxed with a KAWS and The Standard sticker and then wrapped again in an outer box that holds all three, also co-branded.

From Kaws
“I love The Standard and the different projects they have been doing” shares KAWS, “when invited to create something I wanted to redesign something basic that could be found in every hotel room in the world so we decided to make a light bulb.”

Available from Standard Hotels from today

BANKSY SKETCHES

A LITTLE PIECE OF BANKSY HISTORY

An interesting little find from one of the chaps over on Bansy.info following a discussion about Banksy 1st Edition "Wall & Piece" books with dust Jacket. Discussion led to an antiquarian bookshop where the book was on sale at £1000. Not only that, a further search led to these original sketches available for an astonishing £125000. Wishful thinking methinks.

Five original spraypaint paintings on paper. One with extensive hand drawn amendments by the artist. These are the actual paintings made by the artist in the process of producing his most famous prints which were later published by Pictures On Walls. “Love is in The Air” measures 13 x 19.5 inches and is black spraypaint on irregular shaped white gloss paper. “Bombing Middle England” is present without the bomb section and measures 15.5 x 16 inches, black spraypaint on irregular shaped white gloss paper. “Weston Super Mare” consists of three pieces and is present in two states, the first measuring 16 x 19 inches is the man sat on the bench, black spraypaint on irregular white gloss paper and with the cane cut out. This is heavily worked by the artist in black pen and whiteout to add definition. The second state is the now amended image of the man on the bench, without the cane cut out. Black spraypaint of irregular shaped white gloss paper measuring 19.5 x 12.5 inches. The third piece is the saw portion. Black spraypaint on white irregular shaped gloss paper measuring 12 x 23 inches. As is essential with all BANKSY work, full documented provenance and of course Pest Control certification is included. A highly important group of original paintings documenting the artist’s transition from street based guerilla artist to gallery sensation. The artist considered these paintings so important he requested them for his highly acclaimed Bristol Museum Exhibition in 2009.

NEW BANKSY IN CAMDEN LONDON

NEW BANKSY

What looks to be a fresh piece from Banksy went up overnight in Camden lock, site of the much discussed Robbo V's Banksy feud.

Perhaps a response to Robbo's little interview with Sabotage Times earlier this week.

Out of the Graffiti "Fishbowl"world and into the larger world of fine art, which, at first glance may look like paradise, but has the same boundaries. Or, more likely, out of the fishbowl , bounce off the canvas and flop around on the floor until dead. Not sure which is the best analogy really. Maybe stick to the fishbowl ?

Note : This is not as yet confirmed as a Banksy piece.

KAWS, PASSING THROUGH

KAWS
Companion (Passing Through)
January 30 through June 5, 2011
Back by popular demand, Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly, a.k.a KAWS, returns to The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in January with the largest incarnation to date of his endearing Companion character.

The sixteen-feet-tall Companion (Passing Through) is on view in the Museum’s sculpture garden through June 5, 2011.
Although KAWS enjoys great popularity worldwide for his graphic, industrial and product design, including limited toy editions and streetwear fashion, sketches, drawings, paintings, murals, and sculptures, and his work has been exhibited in many countries, his Aldrich exhibition in 2010, which spurred record attendance, was his first in a museum setting.

KAWS introduced the famous Companion in 1999. The seven and three-quarter inch limited edition toy featured the signature KAWS inflated skull and crossbones, with a skinny-legged Mickey Mouse body. KAWS chose Mickey Mouse after a search for the most recognizable and international character in the cartoon world to “take down.” Since then, the Companion has grown in scale. The towering Companion (Passing Through) presents the iconic figure sitting down with both gloved hands covering its face.

RAINBOW WARRIOR

ILLEGAL RAINBOWS

In Albuquerque, New Mexico a street artist known as Rainbow Warrior has been creating a bit of a stir. He/she pours paint from the tops of buildings to create dripping rainbows down the sides of the bland brick exteriors. While some Albuquerque residents are not amused by these spectral shenanigans, others are rallying behind Rainbow Warrior and showing their support. There’s even a Rainbow Warrior fan page on Facebook. Personally, I think this is really great.
And if rainbow graffiti is your thing, then check out this interview with Rainbow Warrior from Alibi.

BANKSY AT URBAN ART AUCTION

Bonham's Urban Art auction kicks off tomorrow Jan 11th. Some interesting though not great Banksy originals listed alongside a host of the usual suspects. Not a great deal on offer and would have preferred to see these works in decent contemporary art auction rarher than this generic "Urban Art" slot.

Check the catalogue here

From the Financial Times

The elusive Banksy remains the most bankable name in urban art and works by him carry the two highest estimates in the sale. “Save or Delete Jungle Book” from 2001 was commissioned by Greenpeace for the environmental group’s campaign against illegal logging and features bound and blindfolded characters from Walt Disney’s Jungle Book being confronted by a hooded axeman against a backdrop of decimated woodland. Copyright issues prevented Greenpeace from using the image and Banksy eventually gave it away to the person who is now selling it – for an anticipated £60,000-£80,000. Another of his works, “Portrait of an Artist” from 1998, is estimated at £50,000-£70,000 while Banksy screenprints are on offer from £2,500. A taste of true graffiti art is provided by part of a backdrop for one of the Clash’s “Combat Rock” gigs in 1983, painted by US-born Futura 2000 as the band performed. The untitled piece is estimated at £15,000-£20,000, while Greg Miller’s pop art-inspired “Phantom Lady” is on offer at £6,000-£8,000. Among the best pieces, however, is “Shark” by DNTT (aka Tony D’Amico). While lacking the immediacy of true street art, the 12ft steel, copper and glass predator is every bit as menacing as the real thing. Snap it up for £8,000-£12,000.
