GRAFFITI REMOVED FROM GRAFFITI
After seeing photos of the tagged mural, Cassady, a professional art conservator, volunteered to come to the corner of Frankford Avenue and Norris Street two days per week to remove the graffiti.
Now we know that some fine art conservators of yesteryear have been considered vandals, creating more problems and long term damage to works than they solved, what we hadn't realised was that they actively pursued and enjoy it.
This story strikes us as slightly insane, from the sublime to the ridiculous, as Fecal Face say, it's like taking the double bass and pianist out of a Jazz Trio because the drummer became famous.
From :Source
By John Paul Titlow
When Lauren Cassady first saw the photos on Facebook, she was infuriated. A friend of hers from the East Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia had posted pictures of the side of a building with a large graffiti tag containing the word “Spain.”
Graffiti on a brick wall is not that unusual in Philadelphia, but for residents of the neighborhood, this tag was particularly irksome. It was made on a mural by Shepard Fairey, the world-renowned street artist most famous for creating the iconic “hope” poster of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama.

THE PIER (PIREN)
Here's the film that documents The Pier piece that we discussed earlier. Subtitles on the right under "Interactive transcript".
The Pier
STEN & LEX INTERVIEW
Terrific and insightful interview from Nuart friends and family Sten & Lex.
Pioneers of "stencil graffiti" in Italy and self-taught street artists. All the work of Sten & Lex results from an individual path that developed far from art academies and design institutes. Their activity starts in Rome in 2001. They were the first artists in the world to introduce the half shade technique that they have nicknamed "Hole School" in stencil. In their last book, Sten & Lex: Stencil Poster (Drago, 2010) they describe the evolution of their style and their new technique, the "Stencil poster," that they illustrate in detail in this interview.

THE PIER
PIREN - trailer from Stavro Filmproduktion on Vimeo.
Not sure if this work was conceived as a film or whether that came after the fact, the cynic in me would say the trailer, the book, the film, the product, the extras, the t-shirt, the stickers etc etc is a tad unnecessary and maybe detracts from the power of the work had it just been created for its own sake and then discovered. However, that would perhaps be over romanticising the nature of art, particularly in todays climate where we have access to technologies that enable us to distribute works to a global audience, something that street art has excelled at and benefitted from. So maybe this is just a very good example of the coming together of a usually disparate set of media around a single idea. Art Concept, Production, Film, Book, Distribution.. including this Blog, we all become complicit in a bigger story and debate that perhaps makes the world a more interesting place. And if not, if it all becomes too much..we can at least retire to a place under the Pier to escape this onslaught of media noise.
Ok, that's too much thinking for a Monday, ultimately it's a great piece of work and I for one am looking forward to see the film.
THE PIER
EVERYTHING CAN BE CHANGED, EVERYTHING CAN BE TURNED INTO POETRY
Somewhere under a pier in Malmö, Sweden, Erik Vestman and Nils Petter Löfstedt stumble upon an undiscovered hollow. For six months they build Malmö’s most secret room with white walls and a parquet floor.

NEW FROM ROA
Difficult to keep up with ROA this year, seems not a week goes by without a piece of significance appearing on the streets. From Mexico to London and now this wonderful piece in Newcastle. Perhaps the finest yet.
Roa was hosted by Unit 44 Hoults Yard, more artists will be presented throughout the year for their White Walls project

BRICK LANE. STREET ART DOC
Brick Lane in Art: The other side from Shafiur Rahman on Vimeo.
Be interesting to see a final edit..
By Shafiur Rahman
This is a portrait of a street and an area - as seen by artists, particularly street artists, and others who live and work or even just visit here. I wanted to shoot a social documentary which would frame the street, its life, and the complex web in which it operates. I wanted to hear the area's "official" stories. And of course the other side of those stories.
I started filming in the fall of 2009. Seems a long time ago. And so this little trailer is a quiet announcement that we are serious about the final edit now...Watch this space I guess. Filmed in London, Paris, Berlin and Madrid. Yeah.. Brick Lane is a long street.
HOLTON ROWER
Ok, so it's not street and it's not urban.. just paint, gravity and imagination filmed really well. Classic.

ATLE ØSTREM
It's not often we get to post local news, but we think you might like this. Atle Østrem, one of the regions foremost writers these past years who has been pushing the culture for longer than I care to remember, including hosting the likes of Cope2 with Xplosif Festival, has a new show. Some of you may recognise the style from his collaborative work with Dolk and Pøbel. Check out more on the website below.

GRAFFITI 1 SOFA 0 FROM ID-IOM
Great little billboard takeover from UK's Id-iom.
From Id-iom
A big empty billboard next to a busy road. What more could one ask for to lift the spirits on a dark and grey morning? After a bit of manic brainstorming and stencil cutting we had everything ready to rock. I was convinced that time was of the essence and that the boards would probably have new adverts on by the time we got back to them but it would appear the Gods were on our side. We donned our hi-vis jackets and set to work. I think this probably sums up the struggle to get out during the winter months when it's really just not as fun as summer time...
Payment (of sorts) came via the loud cackling laughter we received from a car waiting at the lights behind us when we took the stencil down. It's things like that make it all worth while!
Cheers

STREET ART MEETS REALITY IN LONDON
Street Art and Reality on Hanbury Street, London. from Shafiur Rahman on Vimeo.
"Joe Deane, Joseph Loughborough and Ben Slow paint on Hanbury Street, Brick Lane. Ben and Joe paint a piece called "Ma o Shishu" or mother and child from a photograph I found in a book about photography and its power to change in South Asia. Their piece changed the street. Everyone who passed - young and old, local or tourist - responded very warmly to it. As did the restaurant owner who owns the wall. But there was another (AND MORE IMPORTANT. ED) hidden story just behind the painting...of destitution and homelessness in London. 21st century London".
Joseph painted with amazing speed and created two striking pieces one of which lasted only a few weeks before someone decided to make it their private property.
This video is part of a larger project on Brick Lane seen through art and artists.

RECYCLING THE CITY
Recycling the city / Reciclando la ciudad from clara subirats on Vimeo.
Researching themes for Nuart 11 we came across this video in our inbox from last year, may have posted it previously but definitely worth another look.
From the Director
Clara Subirats, from Barcelona (Spain), this summer I did an NYU documentary course. My final project was a short-documentary about how street artists change our idea of public-private space recycling what they found in the city.
ARTISTS: Specter, The Signtologist, Public Ad Campaign and Jay Shells.
"How to manage and deal with the increasing tension in urban space? I want to face that issue using the main expression of their specific way of life that is clearly exposed through the official and private signals that are placed on the streets and spaces. These signals are showing what is possible to do and what is forbidden. But, my focus is the artistic expression of the disagreements and the debates around that issue. Is there an artistic contribution to this debate? I think Art has been and is a very good and intelligent way of express discomfort and disagreement with the mainstream rules, because usually that obliges us to think on the artist goal and how affect our way of living."

RETNA : HALLELUJAH WORLD TOUR
RETNA: Hallelujah World Tour from viejas del mercado on Vimeo.
shot cut & conceived by viejas del mercado
Marquis Lewis aka RETNA was born in Los Angeles, California in 1979. Since first creating a name for himself in the early 1990s, Retna has become an “eternal broadcaster” of sorts, shining a light to the kinetic urban soul of Los Angeles. Take a look at his video.
At an early age, Retna was introduced to L.A.’s mural culture. While still in high school, he led one of the largest and most innovative graffiti art collectives the city has witnessed. He is perhaps best known for appropriating fashion advertisements and amplifying them with his unique layering, intricate line work, text-based style and incandescent color palette reflecting an eclectic artistic tradition. RETNA became just as notorious for his ornate painting technique as his timeless style: he used paintbrushes mixed with the traditional spray can. Many of his pieces synthesize the line between fine art and graffiti, between power and opposition, between tradition and advancement.
RETNA THE "HALLELUJAH" WORLD TOUR in collaboration with. Vista & Bombardier Aero-Space opens 2/10/11. Space Curated by PM Tenore.
ROA, SEGO & SANER IN MEXICO
Very busy month/year for Roa, you can catch him at London's Black Rat Projects on Thursday 10th with a unique Pop Up installation.
From BRP's press release
We are excited to announce the first artist in residency project which lends support to an artist for a flexible period of time with the view to breeding experimentation and facilitating a freedom of expression un-connected to commercial gain. The Project Space is currently inhabited by Belgian painter ROA whose large-scaled and often lenticular works can be spotted around east London and internationally. For this exhibition his work takes a sculptural turn with doors, windows and un-expected openings breaking through the contained frame of the Project Space built in the centre of the gallery.
But for now, check out these amazing shots from Mexico.
Roa: "Mexico is just wonderful, wonderful nature and people".
I have some credits and people to mention; the whole trip was on invitation of Gonzalo Alvarez from MAMUTT ARTE in collaboration with MUJAM (Roberto), so two organizations from my friends Gonzalo and Roberto. And I painted with Sego and Saner."
