ACCLAIMmag.com | SWOON INTERVIEW from ACCLAIM Magazine on Vimeo.
From Acclaimmag
Renowned for her delicate paste ups and large scale installation work, New York artist, Swoon, recently made a trip to Melbourne for her first Australian exhibition, Thekla, at the Metro Gallery in Armadale. The petite artist was run off her feet when we visited her in the gallery, but she managed to sit down with us to chat about her upbringing, her artistic process and future projects. In this nice little film by ACCLAIM lads, Louis Mitchell and Michael Danischewski, she spoke extensively about space, context and participation and how these inspire and impact her work

JR, ARTOCRASY IN TUNISIA
An update from JR on the first phase of the Global Inside Out project.
Artocracy in Tunisia, the new InsideOut project by JR
Art, People and Freedom
From JR
Six Tunisian photographers travelled the country to take pictures of 100 « normal » tunisians representing the Tunisian diversity: men and women, young and old, from North, South East and West, rich or poor, civil servants, business people, workers, farmers, unemployed, and much more… For a country which has only exposed in the streets the portraits of the ruler, this makes quite a difference.
For the first large street exhibition in a nascent Arab democracy, the posting promised to be surprising and the confrontation with art not always simple. Our first two days were quite hot (insulted in La Goulette the first day, posters taken down in Tunis the second day). So we decided to go to Sidi Bouzid (where it all started), an isolated region, to work with those who did the revolution before coming back to the popular districts of the capital.
There is nothing better to understand the weight of traditions and the willingness to change than to post big portraits in the symbolic places of the popular districts and try to explain the concept to people nearby…
And then, we received a warm welcome in Sfax, Sidi Bouzid, Le Kram where men and women (OK, mostly men) have asked questions, challenged the project, raised objections, posted with us, explained the project to their neighbors…
We come back with hope that Tunisia will become a country open to art as Spain after Franco or Berlin after the wall was taken down.
Artocracy in Tunisia, an project initiated by Slim Zeghal and Marco Berrebi and created with the group of Tunisia photographers including Sophia Baraket, Rania Dourai, Wissal Dargueche, AzizTnani, Hichem Driss and Héla Ammar.

VHILS IN LISBON CRONO
Vhils for Crono project lisbon. Check out more on the project here
EDIT : JUST REALISED THIS IS A PORTRAIT OF ARTIST BRAD DOWNEY
BRAD DOWNEY IN LISBON
Nuart favourite Brad Downey, the thinking mans vandal is back with a fantastic series of works as part of Lisbon's ongoing "Crono" project.
Brad is also showing in Dubai at the moment with Cuadro gallery and will be featured in "What is Contemporary Art" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Roskilde later this month.
From AM
Downey’s piece is amusingly titled Buff the Fucks and we’ve become truly enchanted by it. Having found a derelict factory in the Alcântara district, the artist proceeded to cover the whole area with the combat tool of choice of graffiti clean-up crews worldwide: concrete-grey paint. He buffed everything: building, broken windows, metal barriers, paving stones, even the dirt. Everything, that is, apart from the graffiti.
Although much of the graffiti is recent, some of it appears to hark back to the time of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution in the mid-seventies, including the word Solidariedade (Solidarity) which had faded to near obscurity before Downey’s intervention brought it back to the fore.
