LUZINTERRUPTUS
Terrific piece from the Luz crew
From Luzinterruptus
The installation Radioactive Control was created for the Dockville Festival in de Hamburg which tried to demonstrate, in a humorous tone, the paranoia that we are suffering from since the escape of radioactive material in Japan, has brought into question the safety systems at the nuclear power plants.
With our mysterious army of 100 illuminated radioactive figures, which advanced threateningly on the natural environment of the festival, we wanted to invite reflection regarding the use and abuse of nuclear energy, cheap in economic terms, but which can cause grave secondary effects for the environment and health, forever irreversible.
Germany has been the first developed country to announce the total abandonment of nuclear energy by 2022, we know that this was not an altruistic decision and has a lot to do with the creation of new and innovative industries, which will make them pioneers in the market. But just in case they change their minds, we already know that what politicians legislate today, they change tomorrow with impunity, we wanted to simulate, for the festival, a life under the constant threat of nuclear accidents.
Thanks to the people of the Dockville organization for their help and support in putting together the installation and their hospitality during our stay and to all the volunteers who donated their time and abilities so that in the end our army stayed afoot, with a military air, for the month that the festival lasted.
The photos are by Gustavo Sanabria. In a few days we will add more information with video and more photos of the installation.
Time of installation: 6 days.
Damages: none.
Exhibition time: 30 days.

THE RISE
Shepard talks about the influence graffiti, skateboarding and punk rock had on his life and the ways it shaped his art career. Key moments such as a school trip to NY and the melding of styles by brands such as Shut Skateboards allowed him to develop his techniques. Look out for some classic 90's skate footage as well.

NEW SHOW FROM MICALLEF
One of our favourite galleries with one of our favourite artists..
Antony Micallef: Happy, Deep Inside My Heart
9 September – 15 October 2011
On 9 September, Britsh born figurative artist Antony Micallef returns for his latest solo show at Lazarides Rathbone, London.
From the Press Release
Vibrantly colourful yet sometimes deeply troubling, Micallef’s canvases interweave social commentary with self-examination. Antony’s work is built upon the profound belief in the act of markmaking; figures and faces loom through the veil of loose, confident, almost abstract brush-strokes that explore experiences of life in London through sensations of light and dark, mirrored in both his palette and his choice of imagery.
Focussing on the contradiction inherent to mass-consumerism, the artist satirizes the rampant social suspicion of multi-national brands while simultaneously being outwardly seduced by products and marketing. Basing his art on social commentary and self-examination over propaganda and style, Micallef is a traditional fine artist, weaving elements of pop-art into his large canvases.
Micallef says : My work is like a Disney film that slowly turns into violent pornography, but you don’t really see where the change happens. It’s an ambush to the senses to capture an audience. I want to amalgamate and infuse the figures into a synthetic world. The twisted figures resembling experiments gone wrong from a science lab have somehow walked into our commercials, our glossy magazines; a cocktail of chromatic perversion. The aim is to use colour as a decoy to invite the viewer in, to ambush their senses, to give that inner world a sugar-coated, cracked-sweet veneer, hiding the distortion and decay.

LOGAN HICKS IN OSLO
A few shots of Logan's work for T&J Artwalk in Oslo, interesting to see the reversed process he's using by laying down a dark background first. Seen it on a few of the new gallery pieces but nothing on this scale and not on the streets. Works well, would love to see it lit at night.

T&J Art Walk Limited is the organisers behind T&J Art Walk for the benefit of Human Rights Watch. It is a London based company run by Katinka Traaseth and Johanna Beer. The two young women met at Sotheby's Institute of Art in London where they studied Art & Business. In fact the charity project started as a school project in form of a business proposal. However, with their common interest for contemporary street art and charitable work they quickly decided that they wanted to realise the idea of supporting a good cause through the sales of art. The choice of contemporary street art was easy as the form of art was traditionally used to express the people's opinion and a political message. Stay tuned to follow the process and see what's next…
