NEW BLU V'S EU
Here it is, the finished piece from Italian globe trotting street artist Blu that we posted on earlier. Blu asks us...
"Have you have wondered how Europe looks like from the outside? it looks like a huge electrified triple fence decorated with barbed wire, that is how it looks like in Melilla, a Spanish colony...in Africa"
The piece documents the thousands of people who gather and pass through the border everyday to buy imported products or collect things they can resell in Morocco.
It's not only the first time I've seen this issue raised in a piece of public art, it's actually one of the few times I've EVER seen the issue tackled. Berlin wall, tick. Israeli Apartheid wall, Check. American/Mexico wall.. yep, that too. But Europe & Africa...? certainly not something that's in the public domain. A striking piece that certainly resonates and raises some interesting questions for a EU in the grip of recession. Maybe it's only a matter of time for the border queue to be going in the opposite direction.
