Ok, last but far from least of the shorts we shot during the last Nuart. Again shot and edited by Martin Hawkes of Saft Films

Sheffield based street artist Phlegm has been making waves these past 18 months with an incredible body of street work that revolves around a concept of to creating a frame by frame living comic on the streets of the world. He produced this immense mural on the evolution of a couple of his characters for Nuart 2011 as well as this street piece.

Converse created "OFF CANVAS", a street-level exhibition of typography featuring six international and local artists notorious for their artistry of words. Artists move in, street art goes up, developers follow and voila, locals get priced out. Same as it ever was I guess. No need for an arts council funded conference on Urban Development to find out what this writer thinks about the topic.

Passing Through (Hong Kong)

If an artists worth (In the art world) is ultimately judged on their track record of Museum shows, then surely Kaws leads the way. From last years feature at MOCA's Art in the Streets to the unveiling of "Passing Through" (seen above) at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art to his current show at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. This will be followed by exhibitions at the High Museum of Atlanta and next years expo at the very fine Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art next summer.
Demand for his gallery work is increasing exponentially and we can't see it slowing down. Whilst the scene still looks to Banksy and Shepard Fairey as standard bearers, will KAWS be the one to sneak by on the inside lane ? Only time will tell.

Some of you will already be aware of the recent controversy surrounding everyone's favourite champion of crocheted street art Olek. Arrested, tagged and briefly jailed, Olek is currently fighting unspecified charges brought after an incident in London.

Tony’s Gallery is proud to present “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone”, the first UK solo exhibition by Polish-born, New York-based artist Olek. Renowned for her use of crocheted yarn as a medium both indoors and on the street, the artist has created a major installation and sculptural environment: a distinctive Olek-esque living quarters filled with domestic objects of all kinds. These, along with the gallery walls and floor, have been entirely covered in crochet.

DAVID CHOE ON FACEBOOK, LITERALLY

David Choe and Facebook have a long standing history that goes back to David being invited to decorate the original offices in Paulo Alto, California. David painted the walls for Zuckerberg and If you watch “The Social Network” closely, you can see Choe’s pieces over the shoulder of the Zuckerberg character in the office. When Facebook recently relocated, the original works/walls were also taken and distributed around the world. Now, PT2, here's a sneak peak of last nights work at the new offices.

One of the better images from Shepard Fairey of late "Occupy Protester", produced for the cover of Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" will be released as a limited edition print next week.

18 x 24inches, $60 and signed by both Shepard and Sarah Mason (pictured), the print will be an edition of 450 and realeased at a random tome on January 12. Proceeds go to Occupy Wall Street.

HERE COME THE NEIGHBORHOOD EPISODES 6 & 7

In this episode of Here Comes the Neighborhood, Kunle Martins aka EARSNOT, founder of the IRAK CREW, along with Jesse Geller aka NEMEL break down the importance of good penmanship, the difference between murals and graffiti, and the concept behind their "tagging mosaic" in Wynwood. Stealing, masturbation and other compulsive behaviors are also addressed.

Legendary photographer Martha Cooper has been documenting graffiti and graffiti writers since the late 1970s. Her and Henry Chalfant’s book “Subway Art”, originally published in 1984, was largely responsible for the globalization of graffiti. She has remained a fixture in the community and culture, and has been documenting the Wynwood Walls since the project began in 2009. Her photos tell the story of the Wynwood Walls from its inception to expansion, and all of the artists and their respective works. In graffiti and street art, nothing is permanent, even commissioned walls. Because of the temporary nature of the medium, Martha’s photos outlast almost every piece of graffiti or street art itself.

HERBERT BAGLIONE FOR NUART 2011

Second film in our series from this years Nuart, this time featuring our Brazilian friend Herbert Baglione. Earlier in the year Norway was the focus of the international media's attention due to the Utøya massacre where 69 young people were gunned down in an act of far-right inspired madness. The media focus on the perpetrator of the killings has and continues to be contentious. Herbert Baglione rightly focussed our attentions back where it should be and remain, on the victims of not only this tragedy, but also those victims of acts of violence committed against the innocent the world over on a daily basis.

The work lists the names of all those killed at Utøya.

But really, in reality, it's just that there are some pretty incredible artists out there putting work on the street. One strand of Street Art is forging a new figurative art, breathing life into the old dog once again. And Fintan Switzer, who some of may remember from his "Adam" piece, seems determined to be up there amongst the best.

For True Value, Ellis will present several of his signature “Motion Paintings,” including Animal (2011), which chronicle the creation of large mural works in time-lapse digital video. Documenting the accrual of marks and strokes of pigment on walls, floors, and other surfaces, these closely edited videos are choreographed to lively soundtracks and are works of art in their own right. Many display Ellis’s distinctive waveform graphics, or “flow,” that course over and around images of urban life and abstract cityscapes, a vestige of the artist’s early days as a graffiti writer.

We have a whole host of terrific shorts from this years Nuart, shot and edited by Martin Hawkes at Saft Film, first out is the wild expression of David Choe and DVS1. Always a pleasure to watch these guys work, the added UV and dry ice at the opening was a proper mushroom trip. More of which later, Leon ?

Anyway, hoping to find the time and energy, not to mention finance, to be able to stitch these together at some point. BANKSY SCULPTURE TO LIVERPOOL

Banksy unveils church abuse work

CARDINAL SIN

Street artist Banksy has installed a vandalised sculpture of a priest in a gallery in Liverpool.
Cardinal Sin is a bust with its face sawn off and replaced by blank tiles, designed as a response to the child abuse scandal in the Catholic church.

In a statement, Banksy said: "I'm never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one."

The sculpture was unveiled at the Walker Art Gallery, where it will sit alongside 17th Century religious art. The bathroom tiles have been put in place of the priest's face to create a pixelated effect. The gallery said the work "is believed to be a comment on the abuse scandal in the church and its subsequent cover-up".

Cardinal Sin is now in a room with an altarpiece painted for the Archbishop of Seville by the Spanish artist Murillo in 1673 and Rubens' painting The Virgin and Child with St Elizabeth and the Child Baptist.

"I love everything about the Walker Gallery - the Old Masters, the contemporary art, the rude girl in the cafe and when I found out Mr Walker built it with beer money it became my favourite gallery," said Banksy.

"The statue? I guess you could call it a Christmas present. At this time of year it's easy to forget the true meaning of Christianity - the lies, the corruption, the abuse.

Time magazines "Person of the Year" ?. The Protestor. Doesn't seem a minute ago since Shepard Fairey designed the Obama cover for person of the year 2008. Let's hope The Protestor does a better job of it. As much as I love the Obama brand, I think he's proven Politicians are too tied to the money to have any real impact on how people are goverened. Let's hope person of the year 2013 isn't a suicide bomber hey.

BLU IN BUENOS AIRES

Blu is in Buenos Aires and has just finished painting another politically charged mural. It features six figures being roasted on a grill by the flames from a huge pile of burning bank notes. Argentines love to have barbecues (asados) and it looks like Blu has chosen a similar theme for his latest critique.

It's not often I post non art related material but thought this was one kickstarter project that needed to be realised.

We Are Many is a documentary about the never-before-told story of the biggest protest in history, on 15 February 2003, and its legacy, through the Arab Spring to the Occupy Movement. The day that saw an estimated 30 million people in over 700 cities around the world, gave birth to a new global social movement.

What we are witnessing around the world today with the 99% in America, the Indignados in Spain, UK Uncut, the Arab Spring, is directly linked to what took place on February 15 2003. From Wall Street to Wisconsin, from Madrid to Athens, and all across the Middle East, people are rising up to make their voices heard. Much has been said on Evol heading up this years Pictures on Walls Xmas show but one of the highlights has got to be the appearance of Bill Barminski, check the videos on the link below.

Bill Barminski is a self taught artist whose work extends across a broad range of mediums including painting, interactive media, music videos, graphic design and music. His work includes solo exhibition of paintings and drawings, unique projects such as E3 booth design for Nokia Interactive, billboard design for Absolut Vodka, designing gas masks based on cartoon characters and directing and co-directing music videos for Baz Lurhamn, Gnarls Barkley, Death Cab for Cutie to name a few. Recent video projects have been featured at the Sun Dance Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Starting in the mid 1980’s Barminski began painting and drew his subject matter from classic advertising from the 50’ 60’s and 70’s. His paintings are visually colorful and exhibit a strong graphic sense that informs the content which addresses mass media and consumer culture in an ironic manner. His shows often incorporate video installations and sculpture elements to unify his themes. His paintings hang in many collections and have been reviewed in numerous magazines such as Art in America, Art Forum and Flash Art. A review in Art in America said of his work, “The advertising-derived images that Barminski incorporates into his paintings are meant to evoke postwar America. Like filmmaker David Lynch and others, Barminski is interested in the ominously surreal side of the good life.”

In the 1990’s Barminski designed several award winning interactive projects based on his own art work. These projects included Barminski: Consumer Product, The Encyclopedia of Clamps and Cyclops Boy, The One Eyed Detective. Mark Frauenfelder described this interactive work in the pages of Wired Magazine as “…like a carnival operated by Bill Gaines and B.F. Skinner.”

Paris has a deeper and stranger connection to its underground than almost any city, and that underground is one of the richest. The arteries and intestines of Paris, the hundreds of miles of tunnels that make up some of the oldest and densest subway and sewer networks in the world, are just the start of it, now Underbelly have made this Parisian network of tunnels even richer.

Following on from their 2 year project in NYC, Pac and Workhorse have just unveiled their latest incarnation of the project, this time in Paris.

The work of Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly, who makes his art under the moniker “KAWS,” is the subject of the first Focus exhibition for the 2011–2012 season. KAWS’s vast body of work includes graffiti (early in his career), murals, paintings, and sculpture. Following along the continuum of Pop art, his work critiques contemporary consumer culture, blurring the boundaries between it and the art world. Building an artistic language, which includes altered forms of familiar animated characters, such as Mickey Mouse, the Michelin Man, and SpongeBob SquarePants, his cartoonlike hybrids are often depicted in various states of the human condition.
